A field notebook, not a checklist race

Fjordreelcacts is an independent informational website for curious coastal visitors. It is not a tour operator, research institution, rescue service or official source of access permission. Its purpose is to make ecosystem observation more thoughtful and less intrusive.

The atlas follows a simple sequence: notice a habitat feature, describe the behaviour associated with it, and keep the limits of the evidence visible. An uncertain identification belongs in the notebook. A quiet hour without a marine mammal can still be a rich ecological observation.

What our illustrations mean

The flat-vector illustrations simplify shorelines, animal forms and habitat connections. They are conceptual teaching aids, not distribution maps, species identification plates or navigation charts. A scene containing several wildlife types does not claim that they occur together at every fjord.

Lime indicates connections or areas of attention; magenta highlights a process or observation clue; white silhouettes make broad animal forms visible. Captions explain when a scene combines examples rather than depicting a real place.

How to read the references

Topic pages point to institutions such as the Institute of Marine Research, Norwegian Polar Institute and SEAPOP for further context. Those links do not imply endorsement, partnership or affiliation. Species ranges, conservation assessments, regulations and access conditions can change.

Broad ecological explanations are not substitutes for current local guidance. Check the relevant authority before a visit, and use primary scientific or management sources when a decision depends on precise information.

What we do not publish

We do not offer live wildlife locations, guaranteed sightings, nest-finding routes or instructions for approaching animals. We do not treat a photograph as proof of local abundance or a single quiet visit as proof of decline.

The contact composer is deliberately local: it prepares text for you to review rather than uploading observations. It does not contribute automatically to a scientific database. Established recording schemes remain the right route for records intended for monitoring.

Corrections are welcome

If a description needs correction, include the page address, the passage in question and a reliable source that explains the issue. Avoid sending precise locations of vulnerable wildlife or personal details about other visitors. Use the contact composer or email [email protected].
